Welcome to the Carnival of Breastfeeding! This month is about the joys of breastfeeding. Please read the other blogs in the carnival (listed at the bottom of this post).
Peanut,
You turned one on March 20, 2010. My original goal was to breastfeed you until you turned one and now that we’re here, I have no plans on stopping. There were so many joyous things about breastfeeding you and now there are more new joyous things about breastfeeding you as a toddler. Some of these things make life easier and some of them just make life that much happier. I truly do not know what I would do without breastfeeding.
Emotionally. I breastfeed you to get you to sit calmly when all you want to do is chase the dog. I breastfeed you to make you stop crying when you fall down the stairs. I breastfeed you when I want to relax on the couch for five minutes because I’ve been chasing you all day. I breastfeed you when you’re teething and whiny and I want to pull my hair out.
Physically. I breastfeed you so I can put your hair in pigtails without you trying to run away. I breastfeed you when you’re hungry and I forgot to bring snacks (as if you can ever forget to bring snacks when breastfeeding!). I breastfeed you when you wake up in the middle of the night. I breastfeed you so I can do homework or write my blog (like right now).
Bonding. I breastfeed you to make you laugh because tickling, funny faces, and especially chomping on your arm are that much funnier with a boob in your mouth. I breastfeed you when you want some mommy time. I breastfeed you so you’ll play with (and sometimes hit) my face, chest, and hair. I breastfeed you so you’ll stick your hand down my shirt because we both think it’s hilarious. I breastfeed you so I can see your face light up when I ask and sign “milk?”.
I’m so thankful that we’ve gotten through our rough spots and have the ability to continue this wonderful relationship. I mean, who would want this?

Boob smiles! My favorite! My son is 19 months old and still breastfeeding like a champ! We have cut out emotional breastfeeding though (unless he is really unconsolable)Congrats on joining the club!
Love, love, love this post. This is exactly what I would have said. My daughter turned 1 March 10th.
You’ve done a great job of capturing what nursing a young toddler is all about!
Also, I’ve just started putting Peeper’s hair in pigtails, but I’d not tried doing it while she nursed. I will now!
I’m impressed that you can do pigtails while nursing!! It tends to require both my hands, although I can type on my iPod with the hand that is attached to the arm supporting Baby’s back.
And isn’t it nice how it almost works like a “reset” button for an
over-excited or grumpy little one? It’s like magic!

Love it, love it, love it. My LO turns one next week, and this pretty much sums up our nursing relationship, minus the pigtails and dog chasing. More like… mohawk and cat chasing.
Ah the ease of a breastfeeding mama – it continues to be one of my greatest tools even into Kieran’s second year
Oh, yes, there is nothing cuter than a baby smiling while on the boob. This is a great picture! And the hair things works for boys, too: I nurse my toddler while daddy edges up his fade.
don’t you just love the hand down the shirt? Sophie would just yank my shirt out of the way.
That’s such a happy post! What an enjoyable read and picture!
my original goal was 3 months then 6 then 1 year.. she is now 2 years and 3 months and not yet stopping.. we’re now talking about weaning for good at 3.. but toddler nursing still rocks – especially since she now thanks me for the milk!
Oh yes, I know the chomping on the arm game well. The cute nipple-in-mouth smile… Lovely post.
I love the nursing smiles! And when they pull away and you can see that milky grin … perfect.
I’ve cut my son’s hair while he was nursing. How’s that for coordination? (It helps that curly hair is quite forgiving … but it was the breastfeeding that kept him in place and calm!)
I love baby/ booby smiles! Great job!

I loooved your post. This is exactly how I felt with my daughter (now 3) who I breastfed until she self-weaned at 19 months. And I was a little sad when it stopped, possibly due to me being well into my second trimester with my next bub. My son is about to tturn 1 next month and I am planning to BF him for some time yet.
Good on you. I know how hard it can be in the beginning, but it’s so worth it, isn’t it?
